For many older adults, staying at home means maintaining independence, comfort, and connection to the life they’ve built. But as we age, everyday areas of the home can sometimes create unexpected safety risks.

Falls are one of the most common concerns for older adults, but simple changes around the home can make a big difference.

Here are 10 ways seniors and their families can help create a safer home environment.

1. Clear Walking Paths

Keep hallways, bedrooms, and common areas free from clutter, electrical cords, shoes, and other objects that could create a tripping hazard.

2. Secure or Remove Loose Rugs

Area rugs can easily slide or curl at the edges. Consider removing unnecessary rugs or securing them with non-slip backing.

3. Improve Lighting

Make sure hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and entrances are well lit. Nightlights can also help make nighttime trips to the bathroom safer.

4. Install Grab Bars

Grab bars near toilets, showers, and bathtubs can provide extra stability in areas where slips are more likely to occur.

5. Add Non-Slip Surfaces

Use non-slip mats or flooring in showers, tubs, bathrooms, and other areas that may become wet.

6. Keep Everyday Items Within Easy Reach

Frequently used kitchen, bathroom, and household items should be stored where they can be reached without climbing, stretching, or using a step stool.

7. Wear Supportive Footwear

Shoes with good support and non-slip soles can provide better stability than loose slippers, socks, or walking barefoot.

8. Take Extra Care When Standing Up

Getting up too quickly can sometimes cause dizziness or unsteadiness. Taking a moment before walking can help seniors regain their balance.

9. Keep Stairs Safe

Stairways should have sturdy handrails, good lighting, and clear steps. Avoid leaving objects on stairs, even temporarily.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Sometimes the safest solution is having another person nearby.

A little extra assistance with bathing, dressing, mobility, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, or everyday activities can help older adults continue living safely and independently at home.
